Fans of The Rookie have a lot to look forward to when the ABC drama returns for Season 9.
Series creator and showrunner Alexi Hawley recently teased what viewers can expect from the upcoming premiere, revealing that the season will open with a two-part episode because there is “a lot going on” for the officers of the LAPD Mid-Wilshire division.
Hawley described the premiere as one of the strongest installments the series has produced, promising a combination of high-stakes drama, romance, comedy and unexpected moments.
“I think it’s the best of what we do,” Hawley said, describing the premiere as “incredibly high stakes, dramatic” while also calling it “a love story” that is “funny and unexpected.”
What Will Happen to Tim and Lucy?
The Season 8 finale left fans with a major cliffhanger.
After Tim Bradford (Eric Winter) finally proposed to Lucy Chen (Melissa O’Neil) and she accepted, the newly engaged couple barely had time to celebrate before they were abducted.
Season 9 will pick up from that shocking moment, with the Mid-Wilshire team facing the task of finding their missing colleagues. Hawley and the cast have teased that the aftermath of the kidnapping will be a major part of the opening storyline.
That means fans shouldn’t expect the Season 8 cliffhanger to be resolved within the first few minutes of the premiere. Hawley specifically explained that the story needed two episodes because there is so much happening.

‘The Rookie’ Season 9 Returns in January 2027
ABC has scheduled The Rookie Season 9 for January 2027. Production on the new season began in July 2026.
The upcoming season will continue following John Nolan and the rest of the Mid-Wilshire officers while introducing new challenges and storylines.
Hawley has also confirmed that Miles Penn (Deric Augustine) will no longer be a rookie when Season 9 begins, marking another change for the show’s evolving cast of officers.
For fans who have been waiting since the dramatic Season 8 finale, the wait until January could feel especially long.
But based on Hawley’s comments, Season 9 is wasting no time jumping back into the action.
