Class is officially back in session at Hillman College.
Netflix has released the new trailer for its highly anticipated A Different World sequel series, giving fans a much closer look at the new generation of students and the familiar faces returning from the beloved original sitcom. The series is set to premiere September 24, 2026, nearly 40 years after the original debuted. (Netflix)
The new series centers on Deborah Wayne, played by Tony Award winner Maleah Joi Moon. Deborah is the daughter of Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert, the iconic couple originally portrayed by Kadeem Hardison and Jasmine Guy. She arrives at Hillman ready to experience college life while also carrying the weight of her family’s legacy. (Netflix)
The trailer introduces viewers to Deborah’s new world at Hillman as she meets her classmates and begins creating her own friendships and experiences. At the same time, longtime fans will get plenty of familiar faces.
Kadeem Hardison, Jasmine Guy, Cree Summer, Darryl M. Bell, Dawnn Lewis and Jada Pinkett Smith are among the original stars returning for the sequel series. Their appearances are expected to connect the new generation to the characters and history that made the original series such a classic. (Netflix)
The sequel isn’t simply trying to recreate the original. Instead, it follows a new group of students while continuing the story of the Hillman universe for a new generation.
Another major piece of nostalgia comes through the show’s iconic theme song. Brandy is performing a new version of the classic opening theme for the Netflix series, giving the familiar song a fresh sound while keeping its connection to the original. (Netflix)
The original A Different World ran for six seasons from 1987 to 1993 and became one of television’s most influential portrayals of life at a historically Black college. The Netflix sequel is now preparing to introduce Hillman to a new generation of viewers.
