The Rookie Characters Who Could Lead Their Own Spin-Off

The Rookie characters Tim Bradford, Lucy Chen, Nyla Harper, Angela Lopez and Celina Juarez

The Rookie has built a large ensemble of characters since its debut, giving the ABC drama plenty of potential stories beyond John Nolan and the LAPD’s Mid-Wilshire division.

With the franchise already expanding through The Rookie: North, which introduces a new group of officers in the Pacific Northwest, it’s easy to imagine other familiar characters carrying a series of their own. (ABC)

Here are some The Rookie characters who could potentially lead compelling spin-offs.

Nyla Harper

Nyla Harper may be one of the strongest candidates for a spin-off.

Played by Mekia Cox, Harper entered the series as an experienced detective returning to patrol after years working undercover. Her professional experience, complicated past and ability to handle dangerous situations give the character plenty of material for a series of her own. (ABC)

A Harper-centered series could explore cases that require her specialized experience while also following her life outside the LAPD.

Because Harper has already developed relationships with so many characters, she could also provide an easy connection back to the original series.

Tim Bradford

Tim Bradford is another character who could easily anchor a new police drama.

Eric Winter’s character has evolved considerably since his introduction as a tough training officer. Bradford has moved through different responsibilities within the LAPD while dealing with major changes in his personal life. (ABC)

A spin-off could follow Bradford in a new assignment, allowing the series to explore his leadership style and professional relationships without simply repeating the original show’s premise.

Lucy Chen

Lucy Chen has also developed enough history to carry her own series.

The character began as a rookie and gradually established herself as an experienced LAPD officer. Her career progression has given viewers the opportunity to watch her develop both professionally and personally.

A Lucy-centered spin-off could focus more heavily on undercover investigations, specialized cases or her continued advancement within the department.

Melissa O’Neil’s established role as one of the show’s leads would also give the concept a strong connection to the original series. (ABC)

Angela Lopez

Angela Lopez could bring a different perspective to a The Rookie spin-off.

As an experienced detective, Lopez has spent years dealing with some of the department’s most complicated cases. Her professional instincts and personal relationships could support a series that balances police investigations with her life away from work.

A Lopez spin-off could also explore the challenges of balancing a demanding law-enforcement career with family responsibilities.

Celina Juarez

Celina Juarez could be an especially interesting choice for a future spin-off because viewers have already watched her develop from an unconventional rookie into a more experienced officer.

Her unusual instincts and determination make her different from many of the other characters.

ABC currently lists Lisseth Chavez as a series regular playing Celina, and the character remains part of the show’s core ensemble in Season 8. (ABC)

A spin-off could follow Celina after she eventually becomes a training officer herself, creating an opportunity to introduce another generation of rookies.

Miles Penn

Miles Penn is one of the newer possibilities.

Deric Augustine’s character became a series regular in Season 8, giving the show another younger officer whose career is still developing. ABC describes Miles as one of the newest rookies in the LAPD. (ABC)

Because Miles is still relatively early in his career, a spin-off would have plenty of room to build his story from the ground up.

It could follow his development from rookie officer to experienced detective or training officer.

Wade Grey

Wade Grey could also support a different kind of The Rookie series.

Rather than following a rookie’s journey, a Grey-focused show could center on leadership inside the LAPD. His experience would allow the series to explore department politics, officer development and the difficult decisions that come with managing other officers.

It would also provide a different perspective on the department than the original series typically offers.

Wesley Evers

A Wesley Evers spin-off could take The Rookie outside the traditional police-procedural format.

As a lawyer who has worked closely with LAPD officers, Wesley could lead a legal drama involving criminal cases, police investigations and the complicated relationship between law enforcement and the justice system.

The character’s existing connections to Angela and the rest of the LAPD would make it easy to create crossover opportunities.

Which Character Makes the Most Sense?

Several The Rookie characters could potentially support their own shows, but Nyla Harper and Tim Bradford may have the strongest foundations.

Both characters have extensive histories, professional experience and relationships that could generate stories without requiring the original series’ entire cast.

Lucy Chen and Angela Lopez would also be natural choices, while Celina Juarez and Miles Penn could provide a younger-generation approach to the franchise.

The success of The Rookie: North could ultimately demonstrate just how much room there is to expand the world beyond Mid-Wilshire. (ABC)

For now, though, these characters remain part of The Rookie universe—and that’s exactly what makes imagining their potential spin-offs so interesting.
