Fans of The Rookie have even more reason to count down the days until Season 9 arrives.
Showrunner Alexi Hawley has revealed that the hit ABC police drama will return with a supersized two-part premiere, promising one of the biggest season openers in the show’s history.
Speaking about the highly anticipated return, Hawley explained that there is simply too much story to fit into a single episode.

“It’s a two-parter, so it won’t all be resolved in one episode — there’s a lot going on,” Hawley said.
The creator went on to describe the premiere as everything fans have come to love about The Rookie, blending action, emotion, comedy, and romance into one unforgettable event.
“I think it’s the best of what we do, it’s incredibly high stakes, dramatic. It’s a love story, it’s funny and unexpected. I just wish everything up to wait till January to see it.”
The comments suggest Season 9 will immediately raise the stakes for John Nolan and the rest of the Mid-Wilshire team as they face new challenges following the explosive events of the Season 8 finale.
While ABC has yet to reveal additional plot details, Hawley’s remarks indicate viewers should prepare for emotional twists, shocking moments, and plenty of surprises when the series returns.

With a two-part premiere, the creative team will have more time to explore multiple storylines while delivering a cinematic start to what could become one of the show’s most memorable seasons.
As anticipation continues to build, fans can expect romance, humor, danger, and unexpected turns when The Rookie returns this January.
