The Descendants franchise helped define a generation of Disney Channel fans, but the latest chapter may not be reaching the same heights as the original trilogy.
When the first Descendants movie premiered in 2015, its soundtrack debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, becoming one of Disney Channel’s biggest music success stories. The soundtracks for Descendants 2 and Descendants 3 also earned Top 10 debuts, proving that the franchise’s music was just as popular as the films themselves.

However, the reboot era has struggled to match those numbers.
Descendants: The Rise of Red soundtrack debuted at No. 60 on the Billboard 200, a significant drop from the original trilogy despite strong social media buzz surrounding the new cast.

Now, early projections from Hits Daily Double suggest the Descendants: Wicked Wonderland soundtrack is not expected to debut inside the Billboard 200 Top 50, though official Billboard rankings have not yet been released. Until Billboard publishes the final chart, its exact debut position remains unknown.
The television premiere has also sparked discussion among fans. While Descendants remains a major streaming brand for Disney+, the Disney Channel telecast reportedly drew a much smaller live audience than some previous Disney Channel Original Movie premieres, highlighting how viewing habits have shifted toward streaming in recent years. Disney itself has emphasized that recent Descendants films have performed especially well on Disney+, where the franchise continues to attract younger audiences.

That doesn’t necessarily mean the franchise is in trouble, but it does suggest the new era hasn’t yet replicated the cultural impact of Dove Cameron, Sofia Carson, Cameron Boyce, Booboo Stewart, and the original cast.

Whether the latest soundtrack gains momentum through streaming in the coming weeks remains to be seen. For now, the numbers suggest the reboot generation still has work to do if it hopes to match the blockbuster success of the original Descendants trilogy.
