How The Drop: A Snowfall Saga Connects to Snowfall

Gail Bean as Wanda Bell and Isaiah John as Leon Simmons in The Drop: A Snowfall Saga.

The Drop: A Snowfall Saga is set after the events of Snowfall, shifting the timeline from the height of the crack cocaine epidemic in the 1980s to 1990s Los Angeles. While the original series focused on the rise of the drug trade, the spin-off explores what came next as the city—and its culture—continued to evolve.

Wanda and Leon Return

The biggest connection between the two series is the return of Wanda Bell (Gail Bean) and Leon Simmons (Isaiah John).

By the end of Snowfall, Wanda had overcome her addiction and rebuilt her life, while Leon walked away from the drug game in search of redemption. Their marriage became one of the show’s most uplifting storylines, and The Drop follows the next chapter of their lives.

A New Dream Replaces the Drug Trade

Instead of building a drug empire, Wanda is determined to help shape the future of West Coast rap.

According to FX, she believes hip-hop has the power to transform American culture and begins assembling a team of artists and visionaries. But just as in Snowfall, success comes with danger as music, gang politics, and powerful record labels collide.

Meanwhile, Leon is trying to continue his path toward redemption by serving his community, creating a different perspective from the one fans saw during Snowfall.

The Same World, Different Battlefield

Although The Drop shifts its focus to the music industry, it remains firmly rooted in the universe established by Snowfall.

The crack epidemic’s lasting impact still shapes Los Angeles, and the series explores how neighborhoods, families, and businesses are navigating its aftermath. Rather than telling another story about drug trafficking, the spin-off examines how hip-hop emerged during a period of enormous social and cultural change.

Will Other Snowfall Characters Return?

FX has confirmed that Big Deon (Quincy Chad) will reprise his role, providing another direct connection to the original series. Several new characters will also be introduced, expanding the franchise while keeping familiar faces at its center.

As for Franklin Saint, there has been no official confirmation that Damson Idris will appear in The Drop. Given how Snowfall ended, fans continue to speculate, but FX has not announced a return.

Why The Drop Is More Than a Spin-Off

Rather than simply continuing the events of Snowfall, The Drop expands the franchise by showing how people who survived one of Los Angeles’ darkest eras attempt to build something new.

With Wanda and Leon leading the story, longtime viewers will see familiar characters in a different stage of life, while new audiences can jump into a fresh chapter centered on ambition, redemption, and the rise of West Coast rap.

When The Drop: A Snowfall Saga premieres on September 8, it won’t just revisit the world of Snowfall—it will show what came after.
