Since premiering in 2018, The Rookie has become one of ABC’s most successful procedural dramas. Led by Nathan Fillion as John Nolan, the series has introduced dozens of memorable officers, detectives, rookies, and villains over the years.
Like most long-running television shows, however, several cast members have departed for creative, personal, or story-driven reasons. Here’s a look at the biggest exits in The Rookie history.

Afton Williamson (Officer Talia Bishop)
Officer Talia Bishop served as John Nolan’s original training officer during Season 1. After the season concluded, Afton Williamson announced she would not return, alleging discrimination, bullying, and harassment behind the scenes. Her departure led to the introduction of Officer Nyla Harper.
Mercedes Mason (Captain Zoe Andersen)
Captain Andersen quickly became a fan favorite before her shocking death during Season 1. Her character was killed while protecting Nolan during a dangerous kidnapping storyline, marking one of the show’s earliest emotional moments.
Titus Makin Jr. (Officer Jackson West)
Jackson West remained one of the show’s central characters through the first three seasons. After the Season 3 finale, Titus Makin Jr. exited the series. His character was tragically killed during the Season 4 premiere following Angela Lopez’s wedding kidnapping.
Tru Valentino (Officer Aaron Thorsen)
Aaron Thorsen joined the series in Season 4 and became a fan favorite over the following seasons. After Season 6, Tru Valentino departed the series as a regular. Although Aaron left Mid-Wilshire, the door remains open for future guest appearances.
Brandon Routh (Officer Doug Stanton)
Doug Stanton appeared during Season 3 as a controversial training officer whose racist policing methods sparked one of the show’s biggest storylines. His character left after being exposed and removed from duty.
Annie Wersching (Rosalind Dyer)
Serial killer Rosalind Dyer became one of The Rookie’s most unforgettable villains. Annie Wersching’s final appearance came before her death in 2023, bringing an emotional close to one of the series’ most iconic recurring characters.

Could Any Former Cast Members Return?
While some characters were killed off permanently, others simply transferred departments or moved on professionally, leaving the possibility of future guest appearances.
Because The Rookie frequently welcomes back familiar faces, fans continue to speculate about surprise returns as the series moves forward.
Is The Rookie Returning?

Yes. ABC has renewed The Rookie for another season, with Nathan Fillion returning as John Nolan alongside much of the current ensemble cast. Production is expected to continue introducing new officers while revisiting familiar faces whenever the story allows.
As the series continues to evolve, fans can expect even more dramatic cases, emotional character moments, and new additions to the Mid-Wilshire team.
