Girlfriends Movie Update: Mara Brock Akil Says Entire Cast Is Ready to Return, but There’s One Major Roadblock

Mara Brock Akil shares a major Girlfriends movie update, confirming the original cast is ready to return while explaining why the project still needs a $50 million budget.

For years, fans have been asking the same question: Will the Girlfriends movie ever happen?

Now, creator Mara Brock Akil has delivered one of the biggest updates yet—and it’s both exciting and frustrating.

During a recent appearance on the Question Everything podcast, Akil revealed that not only does she already have the story mapped out, but the original cast is ready to come back. The only thing standing in the way is securing the budget she believes the beloved series deserves.

Mara Brock Akil Is Still Asking for $50 Million

Akil confirmed she’s standing by the same number she publicly mentioned in 2025: $50 million.

According to the award-winning creator, she’s unwilling to compromise if it means delivering a reunion that falls short of fans’ expectations.

“I need the money that I need and if it’s not going to be there, I can’t keep knocking on every door. I have to sort of move on. But when that money comes, or a new idea comes for a lesser amount, if I can’t do it right, why am I doing it?”

It’s a stance that reflects just how seriously she takes the legacy of one of television’s most influential Black sitcoms.

The Original Girlfriends Cast Wants to Return

Perhaps the biggest takeaway from Akil’s interview is that the stars are on board.

She confirmed that the actresses who brought Joan Clayton, Toni Childs, Maya Wilkes, and Lynn Searcy to life are all interested in returning.

“They want to come back. They’re open to it. But we all want the right value,” Akil explained.

That means Tracee Ellis Ross, Jill Marie Jones, Golden Brooks, and Persia White could all reunite if the project finally receives the green light.

For longtime viewers, that’s the news they’ve been hoping to hear for years.

Why the Budget Matters

Akil says she already knows exactly what story she wants to tell.

Rather than creating a reunion simply because fans have been asking for one, she wants the movie to feel like a true cinematic event.

She also acknowledged comparisons to HBO’s And Just Like That…, the continuation of Sex and the City, but suggested that seeing mixed reactions to that revival only reinforces her belief that Girlfriends shouldn’t return unless it’s done the right way.

Instead of rushing into production, she’d rather wait until the project has the resources needed to properly honor the show’s legacy.

Why Fans Still Want a Girlfriends Movie

Originally premiering in 2000, Girlfriends became one of the most celebrated sitcoms centered on the lives of Black women. The series followed the friendships, careers, romances, and personal growth of Joan, Toni, Maya, and Lynn over eight seasons.

Its abrupt ending during the 2007–08 writers’ strike left many storylines unresolved, leading fans to spend nearly two decades campaigning for a proper conclusion.

Streaming has only introduced the series to a new generation, keeping demand for a reunion stronger than ever.

Will the Girlfriends Movie Ever Happen?

Right now, there is no official green light for a Girlfriends movie.

However, Akil’s latest comments offer the clearest picture yet of where things stand:

She already has the story. The original cast wants to return. The only missing piece is the financing.

Until a studio is willing to invest the $50 million she believes the film deserves—or another solution emerges—the long-awaited reunion remains on hold.

Still, after years of uncertainty, knowing that the cast and creator are aligned gives fans more hope than they’ve had in a long time.
