The Rookie stars Nathan Fillion, Alyssa Diaz, Richard T. Jones, Melissa O’Neil, Eric Winter, Mekia Cox, Shawn Ashmore, and Tru Valentino. Lisseth Chavez recurs. John Nolan (Fillion) is a middle-aged divorced man from Pennsylvania who owns a construction company. He decides to give up his old life to pursue a new career as a police officer in the Los Angeles Police Department. He graduates from the Police Academy, is the oldest rookie on the force, and eventually becomes a training officer. I don’t really watch the Rookie for romance, though I enjoy romantic touches between all of the couples who have developed. The ensemble cast is great and they all deserve their time. I love the kickass women. I miss having a gay character on the show.
It’s kind of a paradox because I absolutely *love* Nathan Fillion, but this show doesn’t really display his range often. I really miss Mal Reynolds.
Some viewers have criticized The Rookie for “woke” messaging, but ffs, I wish the LAPD got MORE criticism for bad behavior, racism, and illegal doings. So to me, the Rookie makes a decent effort of calling LAPD out. I do not ascribe to the “All cops are bastards” point of view.
