“Sistas” & “Zatima” Star Devale Speaks On Emotional & Triggering Scene

Zatima Season 2 episode 11

BET’s “Sistas” & “Zatima” Star Devale Ellis is loving this season of “Zatima” and he has many thoughts on the current journey that Zac is going through mentally and emotionally!!

Devale took to Instagram to share his thoughts:

He shared:

“Playing Zac has been a true adventure for me. Zac has gone from immature playboy dealing with recidivism to an overnight millionaire trying to maintain a healthy relationship with a woman he so desperately doesn’t want to lose. This season of ZATIMA @tylerperrychose to focus on the challenges associated with black men dealing with generational trauma and abuse.

This season has been triggering for many because we are watching a beloved character, the protagonist, spiral out of control leaving a path of destruction behind him. We are watching him project his insecurities and fears onto the woman he says he loves and resort back to the behavior that got him in trouble in the first place.

After spending so much time being the comic relief people are finally getting a chance to see Zac take his mask off. Tyler said, “If you truly want to be a leading man, you have to be brave enough to tell the story in its totality. Not just the fairytales people want to see.” I leaned into those words and became Zac. This scene took me to a place I hadn’t been since I was mentoring young men soon after my retirement from the NFL. In 2014, One of my student athletes broke down when discussing the relationship between he & his mom. He had just been sent home and his scholarship revoked for physically assaulting a teammate and failing his 3rd drug test.

2 weeks ago that same athlete sent me this scene and said that this same conversation in my office after his dismissal saved his life. He is now married with 2 sons and says that dealing with his past freed him from carrying burdens that were never his. He told me he loved me, and that he hopes more black men learn how to pull the masks down and free themselves of the burden of “so called strength” they mistakenly carry for others.

“THIS ABOVE ALL TO THINE OWN SELF BE TRUE…” – William Shakespeare”

We love that these moments are helping those outside of the show. Those scenes were very hard to watch because we’re really hoping that both Zac and Fatima can just live happily and peacefully but the truth is, sometimes that’s just not real.

Let us know your thoughts on the dramatic mid season finale below?
