BET’s “Sistas” and “Zatima” Star Devale Ellis is now one of the biggest stars in Hollywood but it wasn’t always an easy ride for him!
During his early days, Devale played a lot of criminal characters and the roles ended up being the only thing he would book until he took matters into his own hands.
In an interview with The Root, Devale spoke about how a moment with his son sparked change in his acting choices.
He shared:
“When I started to get into TV and film, I was constantly being booked for the criminal or the bad guy or the ex-con role,” Devale explained. “I thought, ‘OK. I wanna do something different. I don’t wanna be the Black guy on the screen with the tattoos and the muscles who got on an orange jumpsuit.’ And we were watching Power and this was my first time on Power. My son saw me in the scene with an orange jumpsuit. And he said, ‘Daddy, you always got that on.’ I was like, ‘Damn, I really need to do something different.
“So we started doing the Instagram videos because I wanted to do a sitcom. I said, ‘I’m not going to wait for somebody to put me in a sitcom. I’m going to create a sitcom about Black millennial fatherhood. I started doing the skits and stuff.”
This is what we love about actors like Devale, he was able to take matters into his own hands and not wait for a moment from someone else.
His push for better resulted in his being a huge star on “Sistas” and having his own show “Zatima”!
Now both series are hits and will take over our TV’s in 2023!
Sistas follows a group of single Black females as they navigate their “complicated love life,” careers and friendship through the ups and downs of living in a modern world of social media and unrealistic relationship goals. The women must navigate this new-age dating scene as they continue to search for love in their 30’s.
