Netflix’s “Wednesday” Series Accused Of Racism

Netflix Wednesday racism

Netflix’s newest hit series “Wednesday” is currently receiving some negative feedback for the casting of their villain characters!

Critics have taken issue with black actress Joy Sunday playing a mean girl at Nevermore Academy and black actor Iman Marson portraying a bully and the son of a corrupt mayor who is revealed to own Pilgrim Land.

The accusations towards Burton follow a history of comments perceived as racist, such as when he compared the inclusion of Black and Asian characters in ‘The Brady Bunch’ to “blaxploitation” when discussing the lack of diversity in ‘Miss Peregrine’s.’

Fans reacted:

“Tim Burton not racist, huh? In Wednesday, the boats in the Poe Cup are named after Edgar Allen Poe stories. The black character Bianca is on the Gold Bug team. The Gold Bug is the only Poe story that features a black character—a particularly dumb slave named Juniper.” – TheHoneyMa

“People call this a “reach,” I call it “media literacy”” – TheHoneyMa

What are your thoughts?

The series is a sleuthing, supernaturally infused mystery charting Wednesday Addams’ years as a student at Nevermore Academy. Wednesday’s attempts to master her emerging psychic ability, thwart a monstrous killing spree that has terrorized the local town, and solve the supernatural mystery that embroiled her parents 25 years ago — all while navigating her new and very tangled relationships at Nevermore.
