Netflix’s hit series “Heartstopper” is one of the biggest shows in streaming today and was recently given a two season renewal with Season 2 filming now but there’s a fun fact about the beginning process!
Heartstopper Star Kit Connor wasn’t always set to play Nick. He was actually in the running for Charlie.
In a latest interview with GQUK, it was shared by Heartstopper casting director, Daniel Edwards that Kit Connor auditioned Joe Locke and they initially thought of him to play Charlie.
Later on when Connor did his Zoom audition (most of the casting process happened in early 2021, during the pandemic), Edwards recalls that “his maturity was screaming Nick”.
Locke responded to an open audition call on social media. “Joe sent us a self-tape from the corner of his bedroom with his posters on the wall,” the show’s director, Euros Lyn, recalls. “He felt so authentically like Charlie: a 15-year-old who would apologise for breathing. There was a quality that Joe had, a humbleness, that spoke of that.”
The interview continued, the pair met face-to-face for the first time at Locke’s final audition in London. “Kit was aware I had no idea what I was doing,” Locke remembers, “and so he made me feel at ease.” Fast forward to today and, after months of filming and public engagements together, both are relaxed and confident.
We love this but we can’t help but to picture Kit as Charlie, that would’ve been very interesting to watch.
Heartstopper is based on graphic novels by the show’s writer, Alice Oseman. The series stars Kit Connor, Joe Locke, William Gao, Yasmin Finney, Corinna Brown, Kizzy Edgell, Tobie Donovan, Rhea Norwood, Jenny Walser, Sebastian Croft, Cormac Hyde-Corrin, Fisayo Akinade, Chetna Pandya, Stephen Fry, and Olivia Colman.
